It is said no good thing lasts forever, a good meal, a partnership, or even our time. It is also said that the conclusion of these events makes us appreciate them more. When we know that darkness lies around the corner, maybe the cliché is not so apt. In 2009, the second and ultimate installment of the episodic prequel depicted the fall of a beautiful partnership in a brutal beat-em-up fashion, in Watchmen: The End Is Nigh Part 2.

Five years since the events of Part one, Rorschach and Nite Owl are still handing justice to the streets. When a prostitute disappears, Rorschach is determined to track her, yet Nite Owl is more reserved about getting involved. When the culprit is revealed to be Twilight Lady, an ex of Nite Owl, ethical quandaries and personality quibbles heighten in the team. As the case progresses, tensions also raise. Could this case be the end of the duo?

The End Is Nigh 2 is a warm and familiar experience to those who have completed one, with all the previous skills and abilities unlocked. As such, the gameplay is mostly unaltered from Part 1, Once again, the finishing moves are as fun and fatal as a Mortal Kombat fatality, and the fighting styles of Rorschach and Nite Owl remain constant in their differences. Rorschach’s headbutt is still a game-changer and Nite Owl’s taser is an effective way to end an argument.

The talents of Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley also make a triumphant return, along with the visually impressive motion comic cutscenes. Though you might be wondering what is new in part 2? The levels are different, taking our heroes to the seedier side of the city, with mansions serving brothels and strip clubs that would make Travis Bickle blush. Though there are less of them, amounting to three chapters. The new overarching villain is an interesting character, with an entourage of latex-clad dominatrix straight out of an era-appropriate exploitation film. There is an unlockable feature that kicks in towards the end, without giving too much away, it might settle a lot of discussions about which character is stronger on the internet and is fun to play with a partner.

With the dramatic conclusion of the duo’s partnership being depicted, The End Is Nigh Part 2 is a thrilling end to the episodic experiment. Retaining the consistent charm of its arcadey gameplay and presentation, making the two episodes a fun excursion for any die-hard fan of the Watchman world, and any fighting video game fan looking for their next championship. Watchmen, like it’s T.V. series sequel, once again proves to be a binge-worthy experience.
